Contemporary Improvised Music Workshop with Ulrich Krieger, for any instrumentalists and performer

Three days of practicing and performing improvised music and compositions for improvising ensemble with and by Ulrich Krieger composer / saxophone player. Ulrich Krieger is professor for composition, experimental sound practices, and rock music at CalArts, where his special field of interest is the cross-pollination of new art music and avant-garde rock. He has collaborated and performed with Lou Reed, Faust, Merzbow, Thomas Köner, Carl Stone, John Zorn, Lee Ranaldo, Christian Marclay, Laurie Anderson, LaMonte Young, Phill Niblock, Radu Malfatti, Michael Pisaro, Berlin Philharmonics, Ensemble Modern, PARTCH Ensemble, and many more.
Workshop is organized by CEU Culture Hub in collaboration with Jazzaj
JAZZAJ is an out-of-the-box music series in Budapest. Based on improvised music and free jazz, the club offers experimental meetings with all the genres from sweet pop to bitter extreme electronics, encouraging musicians to make collaborations with musicians they’ve never played with before.
The workshop is free, but registration is required.

The maximum number of participants is 25 people.
The workshop ends with a presentation in which the participants undertake to perform.

“This workshop looks at the realm where composition and free improvisation overlap.
When performing a concept or an idea on stage without laying out structures first and notating it beforehand, is this a composition or an improvisation or something else?
The question is: where does composition end and where does improvisation begin?
This implies another question: how are composition and improvisation (traditionally) defined and is this still relevant today?
But also, what limits the freedom of improvisation?
How free can one be in a free improvisation and what constitutes the constraints of free expression?
On the first day of the workshop we will play various open scores and discuss them and their space for improvisation.
On the second day of the workshop we will play a variety of improvisation exercises with various aesthetic approaches and discuss them.” – Ulrich Krieger
